Social media platforms have had a profound impact on social interaction. Platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit have brought disparate communities from around the world together. Grassroots political movements have used social media platforms to foster political change and as an organizing tool. Social media platforms have also fostered racism, sexism and other forms of violence and harassment and have been significant venues for misinformation and disinformation.
My research has focused on using computational methods to study social media audience interactions at a large scale. Using tools such as network visualization, sentiment analysis, linguistic analysis, and other computational measures, my work examines how social media audiences discuss socially significant issues online. Working as a content producer at the CBC also provided unique insight into how to effectively create social media content and provided a strong background in how algorithmic systems shape how audiences receive this content.
